Bird silhouettes

The first graders have been studying birds in their science classes.  In art we worked on making bird silhouettes.  The students first used a tracer and hard pastels to create the cloud shapes.  Then they used bird shaped tracers to create the bird shapes. Finally they used a China Markers to color in the bird shapes.

Stained Glass

The first graders made stained glass from tissue paper.  I started putting thelm up on my window in my room.  They look really good when the morning sun comes through. 

First Grade Meets Mondrian

First graders learned about some works of art by the artist Piet Mondrian.  The students were asked to create a picture in the style of Mondrian. We used construction paper and glue on top of a piece of white paper to create Mondrian's simple style. What does his work remind you of?

Spaceships final

First graders are finishing up on a space unit.  This week students are putting finishing touches on spaceships they created.  They created a rocket using tracers I provided.  They colored their spaceship in with crayon.  After coloring, the students cut the rockets out and glued them on black paper.  Finally the students added a background for the spaceships with construction paper crayons.

iPad space

Before February vacation, first graders were working on finishing a unit on space.  During our space unit Mr. Donoff came to the art classroom to help guide the students through a drawing of their favorite planet.  This drawing was different because the students drew it on the IPad.  My example is the first picture on this post. Please ask your children to see their drawing if you haven't seen it yet.

Space

In first grade, students have been learning about planets and the solar system.  In art class we continued to talk about space and solar systems.  The children made a background on black paper.  They then cut out 3 or 4 circles to make planets.  The students were asked to create planets using chalk pastels. They could make the planets in our solar system or create their own planet.  We used smudging to create a smooth look for the planets.  We also used smudging to create a shadow on the planets using black pastel.  We talked about how smudging black on one edge helps the planets to appear round like a ball or more realistic.

Candy corns

First graders are making candy corns. They traced 3 candy corns on a large piece of white paper. Then they were asked to color in the yellow and orange parts as solid as possible with crayons.

Fingers can make leaves

First graders finished painting their hand trees.  Then they used their finger tips to add leaves. Nice way for first graders to make trees using their hands in multiple ways.

I traced a hand of each first grader, including their forearm.  The students then added branches to their hands.  After adding branches they painted their hand and branches brown.  Next we will add leaves.
